Life expectancy in Brittany is increasing. Between 1975 and 2005, life expectancy rose from 66 years to 75.7 years for men (compared with 76.8 years at national level) and from 76 years to 83.6 years for women (compared with 83.7 years at national level).
5,435 independent doctors work in Brittany, with 3,319 GPs (with a density of 109 GPs for every 100,000 residents)and 2,116 specialists. If we count the number of professionals working in hospitals, there are 9,489 doctors working in Brittany.
The 130 health establishments (2 university hospitals, 46 main and local hospitals, 42 private clinics and 40 establishments that contribute to the public hospital sector – PSPH) have capacity of 20,420 short stay beds (medicine, surgery, obstetrics, psychiatric hospitals).
